The scornful warning came from Belmont Vets in Hereford as temperatures hit 33C in the city.
The firm has told dog owners not to walk their pets in the heat, which is due to continue into next week.
In the “urgent warning”, the Belmont Road-based firm said it had seen “multiple owners walking their dogs in this extreme heat”.
At the time of sharing the message on Friday (July 10), the vets said it was 28C – which meant pavements could be nearly 60C
“It is not acceptable,” the message said.
The Met Office is forecasting highs of 33C in Hereford today (Friday), with only a slight drop to 32C tomorrow. Temperatures will the remain around 29C or 30C to at least next Thursday (July 19).
Meanwhile, Hereford and Worcester Animal Rescue Centre is also advising pet owners to take “every precaution to keep your furry family members safe”.
Other advice includes only walking dogs during the coolest times of day—early mornings or late evenings.
Walks should be kept short, avoiding strenuous activities.
Pets should never be left in parked cars, caravans, or conservatories, even briefly.
If the pavement is too hot to touch with the back of your hand, it is too hot for your pet’s paws.
Extra bowls of fresh water and shaded areas are also recommended.
